Welcome to
Year 4 – Beech Class
Autumn Term 2026
Welcome to Beech Class!
Year 4 is an exciting year of growing independence, building confidence and discovering new interests. In Beech Class, we want every child to feel happy, valued and excited to learn, while developing the confidence to take on new challenges.
Stories, books and reading
Books are a big part of life in Beech Class. We enjoy sharing stories together, discovering new authors and characters, and making time for children to enjoy books independently. Our class ‘Book Nook’ provides a cosy space to explore new stories, share recommendations and simply enjoy getting lost in a good book.
Music and brass
Music is a special part of Year 4 at Sedbergh Primary School, with every child having the opportunity to learn a brass instrument. As well as developing their musical skills, children build confidence, concentration and teamwork as they learn to play and perform together.
Swimming and water confidence
Children continue to develop their swimming skills throughout Year 4, building on the foundations established in Year 3. Lessons provide opportunities to develop technique, stamina and water confidence, while helping children to become increasingly safe and capable swimmers.
Times tables and mathematical confidence
Year 4 is an important year for developing fluency with multiplication and division facts. Through regular practice and engaging activities, children build their speed, accuracy and confidence in preparation for the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check in the summer.
Bringing learning home
Each term, children have the opportunity to take their classroom learning home through our termly home learning activities. These provide an opportunity to revisit and develop ideas from school in creative and practical ways, while giving children the freedom to bring their own ideas and interests into their work. We love seeing the variety of ways children choose to approach their home learning and sharing their creations with the class.
Life in Beech Class
Life in Beech Class is busy, varied and full of opportunities to learn together. Alongside our lessons, children have opportunities to share ideas, work collaboratively, read together, develop new skills and take increasing responsibility for their own learning and our classroom.
We hope that Year 4 is a year that children look back on with lots of happy memories, from discovering a brilliant new book, learning to play their first tunes on a brass instrument, becoming more confident mathematicians and swimmers, to sharing their ideas and achievements with their friends.
