Welcome to
Year 1 – Spruce Class
Summer letter 2026
Happy Easter and welcome back! It was really lovely to welcome the children back on Monday and they were certainly raring to go.
Our topic this half term will be ‘Roots, Shoots and Juicy Fruits’. We will be learning about plants in Science and comparing seeds, bulbs and plants; as well as doing our own planting and labelling the different parts of a plant. In History, we are focusing ‘Women in History’, in particular the lives of Mary Seacole and Amy Johnson and in D.T we are making our own healthy dips.
In English, we will be learning all about the story, ‘What the Ladybird Heard.’ We will enjoy story mapping and retelling the story, as well as lots of drama to prepare us for our class assembly on 21st May at 10:10. In Maths we will focus on multiplication and division, as well as time. In computing, we will be introduced to Google Classroom and completing work on there along with a data and grouping focus. In P.E. we are focusing on orienteering and invasion games. Please keep an eye on the app in case we send any messages about resources etc and keep an eye on dojo for all our learning updates and photos.
Mrs. Stephenson will continue to teach the class Monday-Wednesday and Mrs. Jones will teach Thursday-Friday. P.E. will continue to be on Wednesdays and Thursdays but there may be occasions where this changes so please ensure your child’s P.E. kit is in school at all times. This term, at least one of our PE sessions a week will be outside, therefore, it is vital that the children have the correct P.E. kit in school and some proper trainers (Velcro fastening, unless they can tie their own shoe laces). We will also continue with our Forest Friday sessions so please could children have suitable outdoor footwear (and plenty of pairs of socks) left in school so that we can make full use of our wildlife garden and the surrounding area, whatever the weather! If children have splash suits or waterproof clothing that they can leave in school that would also be appreciated, although we hope to get some lovely weather and they may not be needed!
We ask that you continue to listen to your children read, out loud, at home as often as possible – this is so important to increase their fluency and to foster their love of reading. The phonics screening check takes place in June and it’s important that the children feel confident to sound out and decode words independently using their phonic knowledge so it’s important to practice this as much as possible. We will continue to send the children home with reading books to suit their ability and we will continue to change books on Wednesdays. We are lucky to have helpers who come and listen to the children read on a regular basis, however, we are always on the lookout for parent volunteers so please let us know if you are able to come in and help.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns or queries.
