Governors
School governors make a valuable contribution to children’s education, opportunities and futures. It is a rewarding role that gives you a chance to make a real and positive difference to young people at the heart of our community. As Sedbergh Primary School’s governing board we aim to have a balance and diversity of knowledge, skills and experience to be effective.
- To help future generations gain access to the best possible education.
- To contribute to your local community.
- To use your current skills in a new environment.
- To gain new skills in human resources, finance and management.
A governing body ‘governs’ the school in partnership with the headteacher. They ensure that all children and young people receive an education that helps them reach their full potential. Governors give strategic direction and focus through agreeing plans and aims, setting budgets, deciding priorities, appointing staff, supporting the work of the school and challenging it to improve.
No special skills are required. The only essential is a keen interest and commitment to this school and this community. The most important thing you can bring is time, commitment and enthusiasm.
The governors meeting once every half term (six meetings a year) for about 11/2 hours each time with additional meetings as required for members of sub groups.
If you are interested in becoming a school governor please contact the headteacher to discuss.
The Governors at Sedbergh Primary School use a ‘Circle of Governance’ model. This means that the Governing Board works collectively as a whole team, meeting at least six times per year, without any separate committees. An annual planner and agenda for each meeting include all the tasks which the board is required to consider. The board, to ensure its core functions are fulfilled, also delegate monitoring responsibilities to individuals. These include those as identified by the Department for Education (DfE) and those focused on the priorities of the School Improvement Plan.
