Welcome to
Year 6 & 5 – Oak Class
Autumn letter 2025
Topics for the Autumn Term
Our first topic will be very interesting; it will be a study of the Ancient Egyptians. Ancient Egypt was one of the world’s first civilizations. It is also one of the most famous civilizations in history. The Ancient Egyptians built huge pyramids, temples, palaces, and tombs and their paintings and carvings are among the most splendid ever created. During the term, we will be reading ‘Secrets of a Sun King’ by Emma Carroll. To accompany this text, we will be making 3D clay models of Canopic Jars and other artwork connected to the Egyptians. Keep an eye on our class page on the school website for photos and updates on children’s work.
Outdoor Learning:
Beginning on 11th September until half term, Yr 5 and 6 will be learning outdoors every Thursday afternoon with Mrs Kenyon and myself. This will mean that the children will require a change of clothes for the afternoon and a waterproof coat and shoes. We will be out in all weathers!
Equipment for School
The children will be provided with handwriting pens and pencils but should they want to bring in more stationery, a pencil case with additional colouring pens and pencils and a glue stick would be helpful.
Personal items including mobile phones and smart watches are not permitted in school. If any parent feels that their child must bring a phone to school, they must leave it with Mrs Scarr in the school office at the start of the school day.
Reading for Pleasure
Reading for pleasure is hugely important in Year 5 and 6 It improves vocabulary, it takes you to other worlds therefore develops imagination and creativity and increases one’s ability to concentrate.
Please make sure that you encourage your child to come to school reading a book that they intend to finish. In class, children choose their own books and are encouraged to choose texts that interest and engage them. We have a great selection of different genres.
Homework
Homework is given out every Thursday and is stuck into their homework book which comes between home and school. The task set each week will always follow on from something that we have been doing in class; either English, maths or topic work. The children should be able to complete it independently however, parents can support their child with their homework should they wish to.
All homework is due by the following Thursday, but they are welcome to bring it in earlier in the week. Any homework that hasn’t been completed will be done independently during break time on Thursday.
In addition to their homework task, the children will have weekly spellings to learn and will bring home their reading book every day. Children should be reading at home on a daily basis – ideally with an adult for some of the time. The children choose their own books and are encouraged to choose texts that interest them
PE
Year 5 and 6 will have PE on Monday and Thursday afternoons each week.
Children should wear school uniform on both days with their PE kit in a bag – the children will change before the lesson begins.
