Welcome to
Year 1 – Spruce Class
Spring letter 2026
Welcome back and Happy New Year. It was really lovely to welcome the children back this week and they were certainly raring to go!
Our topic this term will have a Geography theme – Our Planet! In our topic lessons we will be talking about different continents, oceans and also looking at the United Kingdom in more depth. After half term, we will compare and contrast with another country and focus on the different foods and customs of the two countries.
In English this half term, we will be focusing on non-fiction space books and writing our own fact-file and in Maths we will revisit Place Value (within 20) and then move on to addition and subtraction (within 20). Next half term, we will move on to the story, ‘Beegu’ in English – always a firm favourite! In computing, we will be learning to program a Beebot robot and in Art we will be focusing on Space Art and collage.
Mrs Stephenson will continue to teach the class Monday – Wednesday and Mrs Jones will be in on a Thursday and Friday. P.E. will just be on a Wednesday afternoon for the first half of the term, and for the second half of the term we will go back to having PE on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. However, there may be occasions where this may change so please ensure your children’s P.E. kits are in school at all times. As the term goes on and (hopefully) the weather gets better, the chances of being outside for P.E. increase – therefore, it is vital that the children have the correct P.E. kit in school and some proper trainers (velcro fastening, unless they can tie their own shoe laces).
This half term we have the opportunity to take part in Forest School sessions with Mrs Kenyon on a Thursday afternoon. They will start on 15th Jan and run until 12th Feb. Mrs Kenyon will send out a separate letter explaining what the children need to bring and what activities the children might be taking part in. This will be instead of our Forest Friday sessions for this half term.
We ask that you continue to listen to your children read, out loud, at home as often as possible – this is so important to increase their fluency and to foster their love of reading. We will continue to send the children home with reading books to suit their ability and we will continue to change books on Wednesdays. We are lucky to have helpers who come and listen to the children read on a regular basis, however, we are always on the lookout for parent volunteers so please let us know if you are able to come in and help.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns or queries.
Mrs. Stephenson, Mrs Jones and Miss Davies.
